White Horse Inn is one of Zimbabwe's best known country hotels, with a reputation for comfort and quiet relaxation in a wooded corner of the Bvumba Mountains south of Mutare.

Owned and managed for nearly 30 years by David Graham, the Inn was once a family home and, in the 1950s, was converted into a hospitality establishment when more and more people started showing an interest in the Bvumba area as a destination for holidays. David would be delighted to host you and help you enjoy an experience you'll want to relive again and again.

As David recalls, "the hotel was originally built as a cottage in the mid 1930s. Rob Roy jam was made here in the 1940s and it became a family home in the 1950s when 4 bedrooms were added, two of them overlooking the swimming pool which must have been built at that time. One of the Clementson daughters who lived here at that time told me that as a little girl she used to wake at dawn and watch a leopard that often came to drink from the swimming pool!

"Then the White Horse - I have never discovered when or why it was called that - became a private hotel. One owner built on a further 4 bedrooms and in 1964 it became a licensed hotel.

"The first owners of the hotel proper were the Chisholms, renowned hoteliers of their time. It was he who, with his wife, made the Horse its good name for food which survived over the years. I have endeavoured to maintain his standards - we have a large à la carte menu and a fairly comprehensive wine list together with good service, homey comfort and a friendly welcome."

During the time David has been here he has added 4 more bedrooms, two of which are the only bedrooms on the ground floor level, a second lounge and TV room for hotel residents and the Cottage Suite consisting of a sitting room and two bedrooms which has proved very popular with family parties.

He has also made an enclosed courtyard and enlarged two rather small bedrooms by adding on a lounge area and balcony, as well as enlarging another two small rooms by making them into mini suites which make ideal honeymoon suites.

Refurbishing and redecorating is, of course, an on ongoing process!
